Car Key Ignition Regular Maintenance and Servicing

We all love a nice warm Summer, but with the warmer weather, our car key ignitions tend to dry out. Regular maintenance such as using a lubricant like WD40 or CRC in the ignition will often help extend the life span of your ignition and of course getting your ignition serviced by a qualified locksmith before it jams on you, will save you a lot of stress.

Many of our customers don’t know or ignore the warning signs of a dried out, worn ignition and often call us when they are stuck in a car park, at the beach or at work, which just adds to their stress.

The warning signs that your ignition needs to be replaced or serviced are:

  •  Key no longer slides smoothly into the ignition.
  •  You have to jiggle and wiggle the key around to get the key to turn in the ignition.
  •  The key might turn but doesn’t spring back from the ‘start’ position to the ‘on’ position.

With most makes and models of vehicle, a service of the ignition is all that’s required, however with some of the older Holden Commodore’s, they require ignition replacements and Ford Falcon ignitions, they too require an ignition rebuild.

We carry out ignition servicing, replacements and rebuilds to most makes and models of vehicle and this usually takes about an hour.

Sometimes, these signs that the ignition needs some attention, can also be that the car key is worn. To test if it’s a faulty ignition or a worn car key yourself, use your spare key for a day or two and if the symptoms of the faulty ignition stop, then you know your key is worn and you should get a shell key replacement or new spare key, if not, give us a call and we can give you a quote to service, replace or rebuild your ignition.
