We all want our homes to be safe and free of theft and break-ins, but many of you won’t know that Christmas and the lead up to it is one of our busiest months, due to the increased number of break-ins. No one wants to come home to their house having been ransacked and Christmas gifts stolen, but this is a reality for 2.16% of Australians in December.
Commonly, according to Google, 34% of thieves enter through the front door, 23% through first floor windows, 22% through the back door and 9% through a garage door.
We have created 10 tips this December, to help you keep your home safe and ‘break-in free’. While these tips seem so obvious to some, they are not obvious to all, because we all don’t think like thieves!
Tip# 1. Avoid Displaying Gifts in Plain Sight!
Keep gifts out of sight from windows and doors. Place gifts in a room that’s not easily visible from the outside and wait to put them out under the tree closer to Christmas.
Tip# 2. Use Timers for Lights!
Use timers for indoor and outdoor lights to create the illusion that someone is home. Set them to turn off and on at random times during the day, so no predictable patterns are formed.
Tip#3. Secure Doors and Windows!
Double check all windows and doors are locked before leaving the house, even when making short trips. Consider putting something in the tracks of sliding doors and windows to restrict any movement from the outside.
Tip# 4. Put Your Mail and Deliveries on Hold!
If you’ll be away, contact Australia Post with regards to getting your mail on hold or ask a neighbour to collect your mail daily and collect any deliveries from the front door. Piled up mail and packages are always a clear signal that no one is at home.
Tip# 5. Install a Smart Security System!
If the budget allows, consider investing in a security system with cameras, alarms and smart door bells. Many modern systems let you monitor your home by using an App on your phone, so you can check cameras while you’re away.
Tip# 6. Keep the Outside Well-Lit!
Consider using lights that are activated by a motion sensor, so that the lights come on if someone approaches the entrance ways. Thieves are often less likely to approach a well-lit home.
Tip# 7. Ask a Neighbour to Check-In!
Trusted neighbours are often the best home security. Letting your neighbours know that you’ll be away and asking them to keep a watchful eye on the property, even opening and closing shutters, turning lights off and on. This is another great way to make your home look occupied while your away and is a great deterrent.
Tip# 8. Avoid Social Media Posts about Travel Plans!
Sharing holiday travel plans online can alert potential thieves to your absence. Post holiday snaps and updates after you’ve returned home or share it in small groups of trusted friends and family.
Tip# 9. Keep Trees and Bushes Trimmed!
Tall shrubs and trees near windows or entrance ways can provide cover for thieves. Trim them back to maintain visibility around your home.
Tip# 10. Use a Safe for Valuables
If you have valuable items in your home such as, jewellery, cash or electronics, store them in a secured, hidden Safe, instead of leaving them under beds or in drawers. Make sure you change the batteries in the Safe or have the keys with you or off the property.
A few simple changes can go a long way to help you keep your home safe this December, whether you’re going away or staying home, there’s a tip everyone can take away and not become a statistic!
Have a Merry and Safe Christmas and a wonderful New Year!
